{"id":957,"date":"2012-08-08T16:41:55","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T16:41:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=957"},"modified":"2012-08-09T16:18:50","modified_gmt":"2012-08-09T16:18:50","slug":"feeding-my-disappointment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=957","title":{"rendered":"Feeding My Disappointment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I didn&#8217;t expect to be writing a post this week. \u00a0I <em>expected<\/em> to be at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minnlacesociety.org\/IOLI\/index.html\">IOLI lace convention <\/a>in St. Paul. \u00a0But here I am, at home, sulking a bit&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had some health issues that are too boring to write about, and I ended up in the hospital on the night before my flight. \u00a0I spent the weekend recuperating, which mostly means sleeping, and I was just barely awake for a moment or so on Saturday afternoon right when my flight took off. \u00a0Why couldn&#8217;t I have slept through that?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m missing a class in Chrysanthemum lace which sounds so intriguing! \u00a0It is lots of little free form pieces, mostly of a tear drop or paisley shape, that are assembled together in a technique called &#8216;sewing&#8217; that does not involve the kind of sewing one would do to hem a skirt or make a seam, but which I believe involves bringing up loops through the edges of the lace that are then closed to connect the separate pieces of lace together. \u00a0<em>I know.<\/em>&#8230;that wasn&#8217;t a very good description at all. \u00a0I cannot do better because I haven&#8217;t learned it yet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here is a little detail of the &#8216;sewing&#8217; process:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Chrysanthemum-bobbin-lace-sewing.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-961\" title=\"Chrysanthemum bobbin lace sewing\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Chrysanthemum-bobbin-lace-sewing.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">From this book&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Chrysanthemum-Lace.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-958\" title=\"Chrysanthemum Lace\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Chrysanthemum-Lace.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This book cover gives a good idea of the little curved paisley pieces of lace that are made and assembled into the Chrysanthemum. I imagined myself making a simpler flower that could be used to embellish a silk blouse. \u00a0The lace was to be pale pink on my imaginary bone white silk blouse&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>My class was to be each morning for the week, and I envisioned myself doing lace through the afternoons, shopping in the vendors&#8217; hall, and seeing the <a href=\"http:\/\/lacenews.net\/2010\/10\/16\/exhibitions-californian-poppies-an-international-lace-project-exhibition-april-5-21-2011\/\">lace poppy exhibit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today after class, I was going to rent a car to drive to the Swedish American Institute to see \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asimn.org\/exhibitions-collections\/exhibitions\/our-nature-tapestries-helena-hernmarck\">Helena Hernamarck&#8217;s exhibition<\/a> there. \u00a0Big, big sigh&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>I only just tackled unpacking my suitcase today because yesterday the thought of unpacking brought me dangerously close to tears! \u00a0And for the rest of the day I have fed my disappointment&#8230;.literally&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2012-08-07-18.37.11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-959\" title=\"2012-08-07 18.37.11\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2012-08-07-18.37.11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0I made my second batch of bread based on suggestions I got from a very interesting baker. \u00a0I bought a loaf of his artisanal bread at a local farmers&#8217; market and learned that in addition to baking he also owns a local<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alforno.net\/\"> Italian restaurant<\/a> in Old Saybrook. He bakes bread based on ratios of flour\/water\/yeast\/salt instead of any specific recipe, and he always uses a starter. \u00a0I usually use a starter too, but my bread is not nearly as good as his! \u00a0He gave me his ratios (which he learned at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfbi.com\/\">San Francisco Baking Insitute<\/a>), and he gave me a large bag of high gluten flour. \u00a0He suggested two starter methods: \u00a0a &#8216;poolish&#8217; which you make yourself, and a &#8216;biga&#8217; which is based on using leftover pizza dough. \u00a0My first batch was based on my homemade &#8216;poolish,&#8217; and the bread shown here is based on his &#8216;biga.&#8217; \u00a0Both techniques are delicious. \u00a0I won&#8217;t bother to describe how my husband lined my large oven with &#8216;reflective&#8217; tiles, nor how I hurl a big scoop of ice cubes into the oven just after I put the bread in to bake&#8230;.but these are important factors!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Along with bread, I made my first batch of pesto with basil from the garden, so dinner this evening will be pesto spread on cod filets. \u00a0Tomorrow I hope to pick the first tomato from the garden! \u00a0I will make a sandwich with my bread, spread on a little pesto, \u00a0sliced tomato, and a shaving or two of parmesan&#8230;. to assuage my disappointment&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I know this is absurdly off-topic, <em>but really<\/em>, there is nothing like a day in the kitchen to brighten my spirits&#8230;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I didn&#8217;t expect to be writing a post this week. \u00a0I expected to be at the IOLI lace convention in St. Paul. \u00a0But here I am, at home, sulking a bit&#8230;.
