{"id":3347,"date":"2015-03-30T12:39:33","date_gmt":"2015-03-30T12:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=3347"},"modified":"2015-04-01T12:58:09","modified_gmt":"2015-04-01T12:58:09","slug":"salt-marsh-or-rice-paddy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=3347","title":{"rendered":"Salt Marsh or Rice Paddy??"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night we anchored alone in a quiet little estuary off the ICW, less than 10 miles south of Georgetown, SC. \u00a0We didn&#8217;t make it to Georgetown because of waiting for mid-tide in some particularly shallow areas of shoaling. \u00a0The shoaling seems worse than it did two years ago, and locals in Georgia have mentioned that there just isn&#8217;t money in the budget for keeping the waterway dredged as often as in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday evening was beautifully quiet. \u00a0After a long day of listening to the engine run it was so peaceful to be alone in a pretty spot. \u00a0There was no wind, which is rather rare, so when the birds weren&#8217;t singing it was utterly quiet. \u00a0Here are the marshes in the last of of the light.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-30-15a-051.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3344\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-30-15a-051.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-30-15a-051.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-30-15a-051-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I thought it was salt grass on all sides of us, but the guide book says they are rice paddies. \u00a0Hmmm&#8230;. there were some flood gate type constructions here and there, so maybe they were rice paddies. Notice the egret in the foreground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-30-15a-010.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The sun set to a chorus of trilling blackbirds, and led to a cold but tranquil night&#8211;clear skies with a gibbous moon and lots of stars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-30-15a-009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3339\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0This morning the wind kicked up and dark clouds moved quickly over us bringing rain. \u00a0As we left the anchorage we saw a bald eagle in a lone tree in the rice paddy\/marsh. \u00a0He took flight as we passed him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-30-15a-040.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3342\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Before the rain found us there were some stunning moments along the canal as we headed for Georgetown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/4-1-15a-005-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0By mid morning we were anchored just off the public docks in pretty Georgetown&#8211;although it&#8217;s too bad about the noise from the steel plant and the railroad tracks, and the <em>smell<\/em> from the papermill, all at the head of the harbor! \u00a0At the local museum we were told that those\u00a0<em>are<\/em>\u00a0rice paddies where we anchored, and the birds were most likely a type of bobolink that the locals call &#8216;rice birds.&#8217; \u00a0Rice birds have been a problem since rice was first grown in these parts. \u00a0They can eat an entire crop of rice, and no one has figured out a way to deter them. \u00a0So the current rice growing endeavor has failed. \u00a0I don&#8217;t quite understand this problem since there has always been plenty of Carolina rice as long as I can
