{"id":3148,"date":"2015-02-05T20:12:30","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T20:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=3148"},"modified":"2015-02-05T20:12:30","modified_gmt":"2015-02-05T20:12:30","slug":"chores-and-other-unpleasantries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=3148","title":{"rendered":"Chores and Other Unpleasantries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There should be no surprise that when I avoid chores as well as I have lately, they just pile up more and more.\u00a0 I really love to make things and, for some reason, detest finishing things.\u00a0 My little tapestry is still waiting to get the back threads trimmed and buried and have its warp ends finished in some way.\u00a0 While avoiding this tedious chore I have been knitting the \u201cFor Irene\u201dsweater.\u00a0 As of this afternoon, it is now also completed and that means it also needs finishing.\u00a0 Not sure which I detest more: finishing tapestries or sewing sweaters together.\u00a0 Ugh.<\/p>\n<p>I had one of the worst night\u2019s sleep ever last night because of high winds blowing through our anchorage.\u00a0 When the wind is blowing <i>Pandora<\/i> is much like an anxious dog.\u00a0 She tends to tug as hard as she can at her anchor line, first pulling as hard to port as she can, which includes heeling over a bit.\u00a0 Then she\u2019ll pull hard to starboard and heel over there too.\u00a0 Back and forth\u2026 all night.\u00a0 When it gets really windy it feels like I might fall out of bed.\u00a0\u00a0 Who could sleep through that?<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after we got up this morning a really nasty squall came through.\u00a0 Our middle of the night wind was nothing compared to this.\u00a0 Bob thinks the gusts probably hit around 70 mph.\u00a0 We both thought we would drag our anchor right across the harbor and crash into either a mega yacht docked in any of the mega-mansion back gardens or one of the other traveling boats anchored along with us. \u00a0Other boats around us did drag rather significant distances, and we all felt lucky that no one bumped into each other.\u00a0 Bob thinks we were probably a bit closer to one of the mega-mansions with mega-yacht than we had been the night before.\u00a0 During the big blow there was a solid wall of horizontal water coming at us.\u00a0 Poor Bob had to go out in the cockpit during this squall in order to keep vigil in case he had to deal with an emergency.\u00a0 The whole storm lasted less than 30 minutes, but it was <em>NO<\/em> fun.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward we saw some lawn furniture float by from one of the mega-mansions, and Bob saw what looked like the entire top of a palm tree in the water.<\/p>\n<p>I have been meaning to mention that although I never did get afternoon tea at the Breakers, we did have a fun time there. \u00a0We did not find afternoon tea, but we made do with having an afternoon aperitif!\u00a0 Most expensive drinks ever!\u00a0 Bob had a draught beer and I had a glass of house wine, and the bill was over $30!\u00a0 Still, there aren\u2019t many places where the actual bar, where you rest your drink, is an aquarium, and right in front of you is a wall of glass for admiring the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0 Sometimes you have to pay for a view like this.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebreakers.com\/i\/SITE_021227_132610_WMD8U\/FlashGallery\/SWFGA_120713_13363614_Z1BZJ\/SWFIMG_120713_13400701_U1XRE.jpg\" width=\"533\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pretty certain that the hotel is closer to the water&#8217;s edge than it was a decade or so ago when Bob and I stayed here for one of his business meetings. \u00a0Hmmmm&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0116.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3149\" alt=\"IMG_0116\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0116.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0116.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0116-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This year is our first visit to Boca Raton. \u00a0We have anchored in Lake Boca before, but for some reason we did not go ashore. \u00a0Now we have seen a bit of what we&#8217;ve missed! \u00a0It&#8217;s a lovely town for walking&#8230;.lots to do! \u00a0Naturally I found some gardens and houses that I couldn&#8217;t resist photographing. \u00a0The mailbox seems so completely out of place at this house.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0127.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3150\" alt=\"IMG_0127\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0127.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0127.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0127-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I loved this pale lavender house with green plants and planters and the deep rust of the gate. \u00a0Great color choices!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0128.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3151\" alt=\"IMG_0128\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0128.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0128.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0128-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We also happend on a beautiful florist along our walk. \u00a0The arrangements on display would have fit right in at the Breakers. \u00a0I guess lots of people have foyers on that scale. \u00a0For <em>Pandora<\/em> I just needed a tiny arrangement. \u00a0It was hard to decide between cut hyacinths or spray roses. \u00a0Finally it was the yellow and pink that won out over pale lavender and purple hyacinths&#8230;.but it wasn&#8217;t easy to decide!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0135.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3155\" alt=\"IMG_0135\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0135.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0135.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0135-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the dinghy dock in Boca we saw a flock of very tame ibises who are used to having their photos taken.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_01291.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3153\" alt=\"IMG_0129\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_01291.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_01291.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_01291-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Most interesting of all to Bob and me was that we found a Portuguese Man of War floating between the dinghy dock and the ICW bridge. \u00a0I think it&#8217;s pretty unusual for them to come in from the ocean. \u00a0Seeing it made me wish I had my big loom onboard so I could continue to work on my PMoW idea. \u00a0Sigh&#8230;. \u00a0If you look closely on the left side of the creature you can see his tentacles. \u00a0Menacing tentacles! \u00a0I love what happened with the swirling water in this photo&#8230;.very painterly!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0131.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3154\" alt=\"IMG_0131\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0131.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0131.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0131-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, now it is mid-afternoon and we have arrived in Ft. Laurderdale at the anchorage we have visited for the past three years.\u00a0 It\u2019s considerably more crowded than we\u2019d like, and I keep thinking about squalls brewing.\u00a0 It\u2019s still quite windy and now the harbor is narrower and more crowded than Lake Boca, and I wish the wind would calm down a few notches.\u00a0 Sewing my sweater together is not looking like such a bad chore
