{"id":3125,"date":"2015-01-31T13:28:30","date_gmt":"2015-01-31T13:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=3125"},"modified":"2015-01-31T13:33:02","modified_gmt":"2015-01-31T13:33:02","slug":"nomadic-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=3125","title":{"rendered":"Nomadic Winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For years I\u2019ve been intrigued with miniature tapestry, and clearly its a growing trend.\u00a0 In Wednesday Group classes, Archie often talked about exploring how little it takes to convey the essence of something:\u00a0 a face, a gesture, a mood.\u00a0 Then came the biennial small format tapestry shows which I found endlessly inspiring!\u00a0 So many little tapestries conveying so many varying images and ideas.\u00a0 And then came tapestry diaries, an idea started by <a href=\"http:\/\/tapestry13.blogspot.com\/\">Tommye Scanlin.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.susanmartinmaffei.com\/\">Susan Martin Maffei<\/a> has a body of work in miniatures as well, which I have always enjoyed.\u00a0 One of her pieces, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.susanmartinmaffei.com\/NarrativeTapestries\/Pages\/6.html\">&#8220;Travel Series: NYC to Mendocino, CA,&#8221;<\/a> is a long horizontal strip of tiny tapestries depicting images from the long train ride across the US.\u00a0 There are wonderful subjects in these tiny works: farmland, signs from nearby highways, railroad tracks, water towers.\u00a0 This long piece is a gem of how much can be conveyed in a small work. And she worked on a very small loom which she could hold in her lap on the train.<\/p>\n<p>Since I\u2019m traveling on a modest size sailboat, I also need to work with a small loom! \u00a0I often tell people that we are living small with a very large view!<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, I began the first tapestry, a small 4\u201d x 6\u201d with warp set at 10 ends per inch.\u00a0 This is the finest tapestry warp I have, and after struggling with this piece I placed an order with Joanne Hall at Glimakra USA for some 12\/6 seine twine which can bet set at 12 epi.\u00a0 I am looking forward to seeing what I can do with a slightly finer sett. (I won&#8217;t bore you with how hard it is to get mail when you do not have a permanent address.)<\/p>\n<p>My series will be called \u201cNomadic Winter 2015.\u201d\u00a0 Here is #1:\u00a0 \u201cJanuary fog on the St. Marys River\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_0098.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3126\" alt=\"IMG_0098\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_0098.jpg\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_0098.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_0098-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to do a small landscape for each month from January through April, but right now I have another January image from the St. Marys River that I\u2019d also
