{"id":2724,"date":"2014-04-25T17:20:43","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T17:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2724"},"modified":"2014-04-26T12:16:12","modified_gmt":"2014-04-26T12:16:12","slug":"so-much-water-over-the-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2724","title":{"rendered":"So Much Water over the Bridge!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Weeks have passed since my last post\u2026.a combination of rough weather and lots of sailing has prevented me from keeping up here.\u00a0 I cannot use my computer when I am seasick, and I\u2019ve been seasick a <em>lot<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>But that is not to say that I haven\u2019t had some wonderful times during the past couple of weeks.\u00a0 We have had some great times on shore!<\/p>\n<p>Today we are back in Staniel Cay in order to meet our son Rob and his girlfriend Kandice when they fly here tomorrow afternoon.\u00a0 The weather is finally settled and promises to be springlike for the next few days! &#8230;Although at this very moment the dark skies to the southwest are rapidly approaching, and I think we will get quite a violent squall any minute now! During squalls like these we have sometimes seen water spouts&#8230;.I hope we won&#8217;t experience one!<\/p>\n<p>We have lots of plans for things to do with Rob and Kandice, starting with seeing the pigs on Big Major\u2019s Spot and snorkeling in the local grotto, named after the old James Bond movie \u201cThunderball&#8221; where the filming took place. We have not seen Rob and Kandice since early January, so we are really excited for their arrival!<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday we sailed about 50 miles from Rock Sound, Eleuthera, to Pipe Cay in the Exumas. \u00a0(Perhaps I should mention that just a week earlier I also endured a 70 mile ocean run from Thompson Bay, Long Island, to Rock Sound Eleuthera&#8230;.go me!) While we were getting under way, Bob heard on the Cruiseheimers net (on sideband radio) that someone caught a big tuna, so he could not resist the temptation to try catching something himself.\u00a0 He put out a line and within an hour or so he had a mahi mahi giving him a good fight.\u00a0 As he got it closer to the boat we could see it was a whopper!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-123.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2734\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-123.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-123.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-123-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-164.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2726\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-164.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-164.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-164-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That fish yielded us over 8 lbs of filets! We had our friends Maureen and Bill (from <em>Kalunamoo<\/em>) over for dinner last night, and we have at least four more meals waiting in the freezer.\u00a0 We will definitely have it for dinner one night while Rob and Kandice are here.<\/p>\n<p>And what a wonderful time we had on Eleuthera! \u00a0This was our first visit there. \u00a0Easter weekend was lovely in Rock Sound.\u00a0 We decided to visit the Methodist Church for Easter service, while Bill and Maureen went to the Catholic church&#8230;.there were numerous other choices as well. \u00a0As luck would have it, just before the service started Nancy and George from <em>Trumpeter<\/em> (Nancy taught me to make Bahamian coiled baskets last winter) came and sat next to us.\u00a0 They have attended this church every Easter for several years.\u00a0 The service was very festive, with lots of music, a liturgical dancer and plenty of enthusiasm in the congregation. \u00a0We estimated that there were over 100 people in the congregation, about 40% white and 60% black. \u00a0This Methodist Church is one of the oldest churches on the island, and has already celebrated its bicentennial.\u00a0 The sanctuary is deceptively modern, with an elaborate sound system and a power point projector.\u00a0 It was a hoot!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-20-14b-001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2733\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-20-14b-001.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-20-14b-001.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-20-14b-001-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Easter afternoon we met Bill and Maureen at the local blue hole, right in the center of the town park in Rock Sound, for our Easter dinner picnic. \u00a0Maureen had baked some of their own frozen mahi mahi for us, along with freshly baked beer bread! \u00a0This blue hole is quite impressive since it is only a few feet shallower than Dean\u2019s Blue Hole on Long Island, which is the deepest blue hole in the world.\u00a0 And Rock Sound\u2019s blue hole sits in the middle of a lovely park where we could have our picnic right at the edge of the water, in the shade of a big tree.\u00a0 It was a perfect afternoon!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-20-14b-008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2731\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-20-14b-008.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-20-14b-008.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-20-14b-008-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also rented a car for two days and toured the rest of Eleuthera with Maureen and Bill.\u00a0 We visited the Glass Window on a mild day and were very impressed with the force of the ocean even in calm conditions. Our photo does not show how much force the calm waters have when they hit the tiny isthmus here. \u00a0It was dramatic! I can only imagine what that surging bit of the Atlantic must have looked like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eleuthera-map.com\/rage-glass-window-bridge-1.htm\">the day it moved the bridge about 12 feet<\/a>.\u00a0 Yikes!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2729\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-010.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-010.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-010-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We drove north to a spot called Preacher\u2019s Cave, a place where some English settlers found refuge after their ship was wrecked on the Devil\u2019s Backbone (back in the late 1600s) at the northeastern side of Eleuthera near what is now Harbour Island.\u00a0 The cave is impressively big, so it\u2019s easy to understand that it provided a wonderful refuge for those weary and distraught settlers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-050.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2728\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-050.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-050.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-050-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along the way on our 90-mile drive north we also stopped at the Queen\u2019s Baths, another spot where the mighty Atlantic surges against the coast into a cave creating lots of foam and bubbles. Can you see Maureen and me picking our way across the far side of the Queen&#8217;s Baths?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-065.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2730\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-065.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-065.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-065-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Walking along these craggy shores is a lot harder than it looks in this photo. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a close up to give an idea of how rough going it is! \u00a0The rocks are some kind of very sharp limestone&#8230;.lots of small (and sometimes large!) craters have formed in these rocks so getting a flat purchase for walking is virtually impossible!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-083.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2732\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-083.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-083.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-083-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The shopping and restaurant options on Eleuthera were quite a bit more civilized than we\u2019ve experienced in the Exumas!\u00a0 We had a lovely lunch <em>two days in a row.<\/em>\u00a0 The first day we visited <a href=\"http:\/\/rainbowinn.com\/\">Rainbow Inn<\/a> and sat on their upper deck overlooking Exuma Sound, and the second day we stopped at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pineapplefields.com\/index.php\/dining\/tippys.html\">Tippi\u2019s<\/a> and sat in an open air dining room that overlooked the pink sand beach and the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2727\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-101.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-101.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-101-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here is a shot of the pink sand beach at Tippi&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-104.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2741\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-104.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-104.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-104-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eleuthera was so much more civilized than the Exumas that they even have a &#8216;camauflaged&#8221; cell tower. \u00a0All through the islands we recognize the distinctive red and white towers of the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (Batelco) and anchor nearby these towers whenever we can so that we can have cellular internet, such as now! \u00a0But Eleuthera has a cell tower camauflaged as palm tree!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-085.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2740\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-085.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-085.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-085-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So now I am in the final stages of my winter away. \u00a0I&#8217;m not certain now much more work I&#8217;ll get done on my various projects. \u00a0Perhaps my tapestry will not be finished when I leave&#8230;.sigh&#8230; \u00a0but I do have two pairs of socks finished (one of them being those fun &#8216;skewed&#8217; socks!), a fair isle sweater knitted up to the armholes waiting for inspiration on how to proceed for the upper body shaping, several small table embroideries from decades back now finished!&#8230;.and the last project: \u00a0Boo Knits &#8220;Sweet Dreams&#8221; shawl that I just started yesterday. \u00a0Shawl knitting is quite addictive&#8230; I often find that I knit the whole thing in one go. \u00a0I&#8217;m into the final lace area already, so I guess I would say this project is hard to put down. I&#8217;m using <a href=\"http:\/\/verdantgryphon.com\/catalog\/index.php\">Verdant Gryphon<\/a> &#8220;Mithral&#8221; in the colorway &#8220;Bathsheba,&#8221; which has lovely woodland shades of bronze\/evergreen\/burgundy that reminds me of fairies! \u00a0Queen Mab would love this shawl!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=boo+knits+sweet+dreams+shawl&amp;es_sm=91&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbo=u&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=SpVaU5PtJ87MsQS_o4HgCQ&amp;ved=0CEAQsAQ#facrc=_&amp;imgdii=_&amp;imgrc=INkkT2tRYUMPhM%253A%3BscDqdqybQpC0vM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fmedia-cache-ec0.pinimg.com%252F736x%252F38%252F76%252F92%252F387692c29bdc71399b50590d9e0af692.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.pinterest.com%252Fpin%252F65302263319791212%252F%3B532%3B640\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com\/736x\/38\/76\/92\/387692c29bdc71399b50590d9e0af692.jpg\" width=\"532\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll spend the next 10 days with our kids traveling north through the Exumas.\u00a0 We hope to take the kids to Compass Cay to swim with the sharks and see the beautiful beach there, then to Warderick Wells for more swimming and snorkeling in the Exuma Land and Sea Park.\u00a0 Bob has stumbled into a wonderful connection with the manager of Over Yonder Cay, where we may get a private tour \u2026.if it works out I will definitely give details!<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the first weekend in May we must be back in Nassau for the kids and I \u00a0to meet our flight back to the US. \u00a0I will stop in Baltimore with Rob and Kandice for a visit at their house and some time with my favorite dog, Bosun!\u00a0 Bob\u2019s crew will arrive the day I fly out with the kids, so he will begin his journey back to the US the slow way.<\/p>\n<p>I am so excited to be headed home for a beautiful spring on the Connecticut River!\u00a0 I hope some of my bulbs will still be blooming, and I hope I have some Danish flag poppies in bloom from the seeds I planted last fall!\u00a0 On my first day home (if I can get one of the cars started!)
