{"id":131,"date":"2009-08-27T18:07:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-27T18:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=131"},"modified":"2009-08-27T18:07:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-27T18:07:00","slug":"finishing-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=131","title":{"rendered":">Finishing Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>><\/p>\n<p>I have been home for a little over a week, in which I\u2019ve spent a few days with my younger son (attending the all-John Adams concert at Alice Tully Hall, seeing the <em>Julia <\/em>movie and basically relaxing!), a little time catching up with friends, and perhaps even less time attempting to finish some projects before we head back up to Maine for another couple of weeks of sailing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRAZILWOOD DYE EXPERIMENT     <br \/><\/strong>Today I\u2019m finally dyeing with the Brazilwood sawdust that I began soaking in February.&#160; I was advised to let the sawdust soak for 6 months so this is the right time to revisit my dyepot.&#160; I had the dye liquor covered with plastic film to prevent molding, and it seems to have worked!<\/p>\n<p>My instructions (from Deb Bamford) called for heating the sawdust and soaking water together for about 30 minutes at 80C.&#160; Alas, I inadvertently let the mixture boil, which means the color will shift to into the brown range of reds.&#160; Frankly, the dye liquor already looked quite brown before I began heating it!&#160; After that initial boil, I turned the heat down to a simmer and let the dye continue simmering for about 30 minutes, after which I turned off the heat.&#160; When the dye liquor had cooled a bit I strained off the liquid into another dye pot and have saved the solids for a possible future dye.<a href=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLSBzY8KI\/AAAAAAAABNo\/Moa_xroGR7o\/s1600-h\/Aug.%2009%20024%5B5%5D.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Aug. 09 024\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Aug. 09 024\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLSRhgZlI\/AAAAAAAABNs\/8phZRTrc3NI\/Aug.%2009%20024_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"206\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a> I then put in 2 oz. of my pre-mordanted yarn (Henry\u2019s Attic \u2018\u2019Texas,\u2019 wool\/mohair blend previously mordanted with alum and cot) which had already been wetted.&#160; It immediately turned a medium value of dull orange.&#160; I have been reheating the mixture more carefully now, trying not to exceed 80C, and it is now simmering at about 75C for 1\/2 hour. The color on the yarn has become a deep red\/brown\u2026more red than brown! I like it very much!<a href=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLS0O0HFI\/AAAAAAAABNw\/IhFT6J8YIkE\/s1600-h\/Aug.%2009%20028%5B4%5D.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Aug. 09 028\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Aug. 09 028\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLTNK-siI\/AAAAAAAABN0\/U2lYW0KSpLU\/Aug.%2009%20028_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"144\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The flash washed out the color quite a bit\u2026.it\u2019s a much deeper red.&#160; Who knows, it might be this color when rinsed, but I\u2019m hoping for darker!<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>KNITTING     <br \/><\/strong>While dyeing I have also been finishing up a simple vest project that I\u2019d like to wear in Maine on cool evenings.&#160; It\u2019s a vest knit entirely in stockinette from yarn that I got from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discontinuedbrandnameyarn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">DBNY<\/a> (Discontinued Brand Name Yarns).&#160; I have sewn on the zipper now and am now sewing a decorative ribbon (from LFN designs) over the zipper to add some visual interest when the vest is open.<a href=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLTYjEALI\/AAAAAAAABN4\/hyuhtFm28p4\/s1600-h\/Aug.%2009%20020%5B4%5D.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Aug. 09 020\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Aug. 09 020\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLTm1yUfI\/AAAAAAAABN8\/pftaY1hSFF4\/Aug.%2009%20020_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"128\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLUR9J6SI\/AAAAAAAABOA\/xCa2QtK2lkM\/s1600-h\/Aug.%2009%20021%5B9%5D.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Aug. 09 021\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Aug. 09 021\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLUiUGbVI\/AAAAAAAABOE\/mxdh-MXcQiw\/Aug.%2009%20021_thumb%5B7%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"145\" height=\"174\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SPINNING     <br \/><\/strong>My dark brown\/grey corriedale which I washed and sent out to be processed into bumps, and which I was spinning during out last sailing trip, is <em>not <\/em>the right color for the stranded knit sweater I have in mind for the multi-colored roving, in a colorway called \u201cGrapevine\u201d which I got at MDS&amp;W from <a href=\"www.galesart.com\" target=\"_blank\">Gale Evans<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLUwmzMpI\/AAAAAAAABOI\/wErEzWiIfDA\/s1600-h\/Gale%20Evans%20Grapevine%20roving%20BFL%5B4%5D.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Gale Evans Grapevine roving BFL\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gale Evans Grapevine roving BFL\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLVa1u9lI\/AAAAAAAABOM\/t0lALgDdcA8\/Gale%20Evans%20Grapevine%20roving%20BFL_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"176\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>&#160; Earlier this morning I sat down to spin a little of the dark charcoal Shetland roving that I recently got from Hatchtown Farm, and it appears to be just right for the Grapevine.&#160; I am considering doing <a href=\"http:\/\/twistcollective.com\/collection\/index.php\/component\/content\/article\/75-fall-2009-patterns\/395-wedgewood-by-cheryl-burke\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> sweater from the Twist Collective.<a href=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLVy6hVvI\/AAAAAAAABOQ\/RaXTz1uj4jw\/s1600-h\/Aug.%2009%20027%5B4%5D.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Aug. 09 027\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Aug. 09 027\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLWK_1ucI\/AAAAAAAABOU\/BKFCtUb6ER4\/Aug.%2009%20027_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"184\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>I think I will use the grey\/brown Corrie to make a lace cardigan sometime in the future.&#160; It\u2019s a dream to spin, but I will put that project aside in order to spin the Shetland for the the stranded sweater. Well, now! Aren\u2019t I being mature?<\/p>\n<p>And there was a very happy occurance in my inbox! Linda Lee has written to tell me that she will soon be dyeing my cotton sliver in her colorway \u201cPhoenix Garden.\u201d&#160; I can\u2019t wait to get back to that project!&#160; Maybe the package will be waiting for me when I return home!<a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/SpbLW_wDayI\/AAAAAAAABOY\/TDERh5VxVLs\/s1600-h\/Cotton%20spinning%20%281%29%5B2%5D.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; While I am thinking about what sampling I\u2019d like to do on the rest of the warp from that class, I have also been thinking about future tapestries.&#160; I have some ideas brewing\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>I need to leave some time today for packing since we are leaving tomorrow morning!&#160;
