Day at Six Paca Farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Clever name, right?\u00a0 Six Paca Farm.\u00a0 Each new cria born on the farm gets named after a brew.\u00a0 It was a soft October day, well ahead of the height of fall color, heavy with the coming rain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1652-e1539294967376.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5629\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1652-e1539294967376.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1652\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joe introduced to us to some of the females and the quickly growing brood of cria.\u00a0 Patriot is the youngest of the herd, born on Memorial Day.\u00a0 He is a cutie!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1631-e1539295044232.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5631\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1631-e1539295044232.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1631\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are 37 alpaca on the farm at the moment.\u00a0 They live in a bucolic setting in Bozrah, Connecticut.\u00a0 Along with the farm, there is a nice shop full of alpaca things&#8211;from yarn to finished garments and hats\/mittens\/socks, and items from other local farms, such as cheese, milk, meat.\u00a0 The owner Linda is a gracious host!\u00a0 She set up tables and chairs under an awning for us to enjoy the lunches we brought, and she had coffee going, both at the farm and her mill that is just down the road.<\/p>\n<p>The alpacas came out of the barn in small groups.\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t entirely sure about visitors at first.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1628.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5643\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1628.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1628\" width=\"3024\" height=\"4032\" center;\">Eventually they all came out and enjoyed some attention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1653-e1539295182369.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s clear that Joe loves these animals, and they love him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1634-e1539295352205.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5632\" much about raising alpacas&#8211;their life span, what they eat, how to keep them healthy on a farm, pregnancy and gestation (11 months!), weaning the babies, and breeding for soft fiber and color.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1639-e1539295459237.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5635\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1639-e1539295459237.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1639\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Prior to visiting the farm, we met at the mill down the street.\u00a0 Linda owns the mill and the farm, and she started the mill about 9 years ago, when she was tired of waiting for her fiber to be processed at outside mills.\u00a0 Back then it might take as long as 9 months to get her alpaca yarns back from a mill.\u00a0 Now that she takes outside orders at her own mill, she says it sometimes still takes about 9 months to get her own fiber processing done.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Linda (behind the desk) is giving us some background information before go into the mill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1610-e1539295743836.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" could.\u00a0 The picker is from New Zealand.\u00a0 The carder is from Italy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is a pretty fancy washing station.\u00a0 There are seven separate bins, each with a heating element and a drain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1612-e1539295883876.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Last week I dyed two onesies to give to our grand-twins, Emme and Rhett.\u00a0 Barbara from my small weavers&#8217; group gave them to me when we all met for our annual dye day.\u00a0 I was not able to stay and dye, so I brought them home.\u00a0 In my dye stash I have a color I love called &#8216;wasabi.&#8217;\u00a0 It&#8217;s a ProChem MX dye.\u00a0 I thought it was the perfect name&#8211;and color&#8211; for a couple of babies who are peas in the same pod.\u00a0 This is Emme&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_1591-e1539296823342.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5650\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When we got back from our visit to the kids and grandkids, I decided to make a project I&#8217;d once made ages ago.\u00a0 A few decades ago my embroidery guild in New Jersey asked each member to make a tote bag for small projects.
