{"id":5563,"date":"2018-08-22T10:45:10","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T15:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=5563"},"modified":"2018-08-22T11:00:09","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T16:00:09","slug":"flapping-in-the-breeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=5563","title":{"rendered":"Flapping in the Breeze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Isn&#8217;t August the month when almost everyone goes on vacation? &#8230;when almost everyone takes some time off to relax and recharge?\u00a0 I&#8217;m feeling pretty overwhelmed this month, like I&#8217;m hanging on to a frayed cord that is snapping in a gale.<\/p>\n<p>But most of what is happening these days is good news.\u00a0 If I weren&#8217;t so slow at accomplishing the things I am driven to do, I&#8217;d be thrilled at what&#8217;s coming down the pike.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the postcard for the upcoming exhibition of fiber art at the Eclipse Mill Gallery in North Adams, Massachusetts.\u00a0 I had no idea that my tapestry would be included on the card.\u00a0 What a happy surprise!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/NAFA_Evite.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5564\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/NAFA_Evite.jpeg\" alt=\"NAFA_Evite\" width=\"457\" height=\"856\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/NAFA_Evite.jpeg 683w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/NAFA_Evite-160x300.jpeg 160w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/NAFA_Evite-546x1024.jpeg 546w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I joined this group when it was formed by Betty Vera this spring, but I have not yet met the other members.\u00a0 This weekend I am going to one of the monthly meetings and am looking forward to getting to know the other artists.\u00a0 I think Betty Vera and I are the only weavers in this group (not entirely certain about that), so I am interested in learning more of what the other artists do.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks back I was catching up on reading the various journals and magazines I miss when I am away for the winter.\u00a0 In an issue of\u00a0 &#8220;The Journal for Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers&#8221; (from the UK guild), I saw an advertisement for an iphone case made of <em>Harris Tweed<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u00a0became\u00a0single minded about obtaining one of these.\u00a0 A google search led me to Amazon.\u00a0 Yeah, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/MONOJOY-Handmade-Scottish-Magnetic-Closure\/dp\/B0711ZY8GV\/ref=sr_1_2?s=office-products&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1534953574&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=harris+tweed+iphone+case\">Amazon<\/a>.\u00a0 There are more, if you&#8217;re tempted too.\u00a0 I just love it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-0489-e1534951088456.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5565\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-0489-e1534951088456.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-0489\" width=\"430\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-0489-e1534951088456.jpg 525w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-0489-e1534951088456-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My two small tapestries are now mounted.\u00a0 It feels <em>so good<\/em> to finish things.\u00a0 I wish it happened more often.\u00a0 I think I&#8217;ll call this one &#8220;Primary Source.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0I hope some of you get my signature.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1415-e1534951400933.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5566\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1415-e1534951400933.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-1415\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1415-e1534951400933.jpg 525w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1415-e1534951400933-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And here is the other, &#8220;Blown Off Course.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1413-e1534951513207.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5567\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1413-e1534951513207.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-1413\" width=\"384\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I think it needs a braid, and with that in mind, I am sampling.\u00a0 My first attempt is too thick, but I like the design.\u00a0 I will try it again as soon as I finish this one.\u00a0 Next time I&#8217;ll put fewer strands on each tama. And next time I&#8217;ll take a better photo! I only recently learned that an American kumihimo society has been formed.\u00a0 It piqued my interest to get back to this.\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to use the flat braids from the taka dai as embellishments on clothing and handbags.\u00a0 As of yet, no fabric with which to implement these ideas!\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t that always the way? &#8212;\u00a0 at least for me! &#8212;\u00a0 to put the carriage before the horse.\u00a0 It&#8217;s thrilling to be enthusiastic though!\u00a0 Clare and Julia and I are investigating other silks for these braids&#8230;that is, other than the pre-cut fine silks you buy in packages.\u00a0 We want to find the same fineness on cones so we can choose our warp lengths.\u00a0 Hopefully we&#8217;ll have a source soon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And I&#8217;ve been thinking of adding other braids to my tapestries.\u00a0 In fact, for my &#8216;real&#8217; Portuguese Man of War tapestry, that currently only exists in my dreams, I plant to use a number of braids, along with other handwork techniques for embellishment.\u00a0 In my mind this piece is a tour do force.\u00a0 No cartoon yet &#8230;..because I actually don&#8217;t know if I can capture something so wonderfully ephemeral down on real materials, like paper or warp and weft.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So August marches on like a house on fire.\u00a0 I hope I can keep up&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Isn&#8217;t August the month when almost everyone goes on vacation? &#8230;when almost everyone takes some time off to relax and recharge?\u00a0 I&#8217;m feeling pretty overwhelmed this month, like I&#8217;m hanging on to a frayed cord that is snapping in a gale.
