{"id":5555,"date":"2018-08-18T13:46:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-18T18:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=5555"},"modified":"2018-08-18T13:49:47","modified_gmt":"2018-08-18T18:49:47","slug":"september-around-the-corner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=5555","title":{"rendered":"September around the Corner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine my excitement when I saw a recent post on facebook that some large scale lace I admired from images on the internet is coming to the US! &#8212; Not only to the US, but within driving distance for me!<\/p>\n<p>These were the images that piqued my interest in large scale lace installations in the environment.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mrxstitch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/laceboatwreflect1Choi.jpeg?fit=490%2C735&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"735\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a large crocheted piece based on a traditional Dutch head bonnet.\u00a0 Delicate lace made on a huge scale to interact in the environment.\u00a0 Hanging over a canal, in Amsterdam, it reflects on the water beneath, whether ruffled by wind or calm and still.\u00a0 It casts shadows day and night on its surroundings.\u00a0 When I saw this online I dearly wished I could see it in situ.\u00a0 There is an <a href=\"http:\/\/choishine.com\/images\/laceprototype1-246.jpeg\">excellent description<\/a> of how this piece was made and assembled.<\/p>\n<p>It has two sister pieces called the Urchins, and these will be part of the exhibition at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hunterdonartmuseum.org\/future-exhibitions\/\">Hunterdon Museum<\/a> in Clinton, NJ, that opens in late September.\u00a0 These two urchins will hang over the\u00a0Toshiko Takaezu Terrace at the museum, which overlooks the waterfall on the South Branch of the Raritan River.\u00a0 It will be their first trip to the US.\u00a0 They will only be on view during the first two weeks of this exhibition.\u00a0 Inside the museum will be many other pieces of lace, including bobbin lace and needle lace, done on large scale.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t wait to see them!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.themindcircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/crocheted-urchins-sculpture-architects-singapore-marina-bay-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, the big decision is&#8230;.. do I go for the opening?\u00a0 The pluses of that would be getting to hear two lectures on the lace exhibit &#8212; one by the curator Devon Thein, and another by the creators of the Urchins, Jin Choi and Thomas Shine.\u00a0 Afterward, at dusk, the Urchins will be lit.\u00a0 Those are <em>big<\/em> pluses.\u00a0 The downside?\u00a0 Well, I never fully enjoy the artwork at an opening.\u00a0 It&#8217;s crowded, I can&#8217;t fully see the pieces on display, it&#8217;s noisy&#8230;.it&#8217;s a party.\u00a0 The likelihood of me getting to this exhibit twice is pretty slim.\u00a0 I have to choose.\u00a0 What would you do?<\/p>\n<p>My friend Clare is letting me use her taka dai once again, so I have put on a warp for a 2\/2 twill design out of Rodrick Owen&#8217;s book.\u00a0 I dressed the taka on Thursday and will spend some time at her house tomorrow weaving.\u00a0 I almost live there now&#8230;.not sure what her partner thinks of always finding me in their sunroom.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a look\u00a0at the first braid in progress.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll take photos tomorrow of my twill attempt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1104-e1534616870972.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5556\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1104-e1534616870972.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-1104\" width=\"452\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1104-e1534616870972.jpg 525w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG-1104-e1534616870972-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With luck, my next\u00a0 post will have photos of the finished mounting of the little Portuguese Man of War tapestry and maybe a new flat braid from the taka dai.\u00a0 Oh yeah, and the last of those lace blankets I&#8217;ve knitted for my three tiny grandchildren.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you want to see them?\u00a0 (the grandchildren, that is, not the blanket)<\/p>\n<p>This is just pulls my heartstrings!
