{"id":5479,"date":"2018-06-10T20:34:02","date_gmt":"2018-06-10T20:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=5479"},"modified":"2018-06-10T20:38:01","modified_gmt":"2018-06-10T20:38:01","slug":"following-a-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=5479","title":{"rendered":"Following a thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whenever I visit a gallery of paintings, the works that depict textiles grab most of my attention.\u00a0 Bob and I visited the New Britain Museum of American Art last week.\u00a0 It was our anniversary, and I could picture us wandering the galleries together and talking about what we liked.\u00a0 In reality, we were hardly in a room together.\u00a0 He lingered over the landscapes, while I was drawn to portraits and landscapes studded with people\u00a0captured in the daily work of living.<\/p>\n<p>This is the prize winner.\u00a0 I had to go back twice and look again.\u00a0 It is a stunning landscape with the fog and the sheep in the background, and the spent flowers in the foreground. But these two girls are show stoppers!\u00a0 I can feel the chill in the air, the blush on their cheeks from hard work, the roughness of their clothing.\u00a0 And look!\u00a0 One girl is knitting! Daniel Ridgway Knight, <em>The Meeting<\/em>.\u00a0 1888.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1013-e1528659210243.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5493\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1013-e1528659210243.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1013\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I know you want a closer look, as I did.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1014-e1528659382710.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5494\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1014-e1528659382710.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1014\" width=\"551\" height=\"734\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here, Thomas Eakins has captured an elderly woman doing handwork. He called this painting <em>Old Lady Sewing<\/em>. Perhaps she was younger than I am now when he painted her, although I&#8217;d at least like to think I look younger than she does.\u00a0 At any rate, even 10 years ago, I could not do fine work by such light.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1020-e1528659684481.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5495\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1020-e1528659684481.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1020\" width=\"551\" height=\"734\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Closer, you ask?\u00a0 My phone brightened the colors too much.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1021-e1528659738932.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5496\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1021-e1528659738932.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1021\" width=\"550\" height=\"733\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whenever I visited the Metropolitan or the Frick, when I lived nearby, I would get pulled into the paintings that depicted lacework.\u00a0 New Britain had a few examples. This is John Singer Sargent&#8217;s <em>Miss Cara Burch<\/em>, 1888.\u00a0 While everyone else admires this young girl&#8217;s\u00a0porcelain\u00a0complexion, I am studying crispness of her silk dress and the frill at the edge of her ruffled neckline and bodice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1026-e1528660023670.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5497\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1026-e1528660023670.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1026\" width=\"549\" height=\"732\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This painting was a pleasure with its riot of textiles.\u00a0 <em>Woman before a Mirror<\/em>, 1918.<br \/>\nLouis Ritman<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1027-e1528662475810.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5503\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1027-e1528662475810.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1027\" width=\"551\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I\u00a0recently saw this image connected to an Augusten Burroughs quote. Some things are so awkwardly true.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1055.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5500\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1055.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1055\" width=\"458\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1055.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1055-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1055-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, my English friend Lesley sent me this photo.\u00a0 She was staying at an inn in Belgium, where the innkeeper\u00a0teaches\u00a0lace techniques during the day and runs the inn in the evenings.\u00a0 That would be\u00a0a terrific get away for a few people I know!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1054.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5499\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1054.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1054\" width=\"500\" height=\"877\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1054.jpg 761w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1054-171x300.jpg 171w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_1054-584x1024.jpg 584w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, as I write this, I have a pot of finely chopped carrot tops simmering on the stove.\u00a0 I&#8217;m waiting for them to give up their color, which could take another hour or so.\u00a0 When they do, I&#8217;ll add some alum mordanted, white wool yarn from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weaversbazaar.com\/\">Weavers&#8217; Bazaar<\/a>.\u00a0 I believe it is mostly Leicester Long Wool, spun for tapestry.\u00a0 Fingers crossed that I&#8217;ll get the lovely spring green that Jenny Dean got in one of her books. If there&#8217;s time, I&#8217;ll continue doing the finishing work on my little Portuguese Man of War tapestry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And June is calling&#8230;.
