{"id":5099,"date":"2017-10-16T16:25:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T16:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=5099"},"modified":"2017-10-17T12:52:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T12:52:00","slug":"on-the-weavers-trail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=5099","title":{"rendered":"On the Weavers&#8217; Trail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the weekend I visited the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.workingweavers.com\/\">Working Weavers&#8217; Studio Trail<\/a>\u00a0in Massachusetts, with my friend Jody.\u00a0 We only had part of the day on Saturday, so we chose three studios that are about 1 1\/2 hour drive from our part of Connecticut.\u00a0 All three studios we visited were in Florence, Mass, just north of Northampton, the home of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yarn.com\">WEBS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First we stopped at Scott Norris&#8217; studio, which he calls\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/elamswidow.com\/\">Elam&#8217;s Widow<\/a>.\u00a0 He works mostly with linens which he dyes himself with\u00a0fiber reactive dyes and mordants with soda ash and salt.\u00a0 I am curious to try dyeing linen, and he generously offered to give me some tips to help me get good results.\u00a0He weaves linen towels in several sizes, including large bath towels&#8211;in wonderful color combinations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-10.59.48-e1508167038826.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5090\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-10.59.48-e1508167038826.jpg\" alt=\"2017-10-14 10.59.48\" width=\"513\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-10.59.48-e1508167038826.jpg 525w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-10.59.48-e1508167038826-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jody and I both bought plain weave hand towels, like the ones in this photo.\u00a0 I also bought a silk handkerchief&#8211;<em>can you imagine?<\/em>\u00a0 Such a luxury, that I&#8217;ll never actually use!\u00a0 It happened to be a huck pattern that is similar to one I&#8217;ve woven myself as napkins, in 40\/2 linen.\u00a0 Here is a photo of the two together.\u00a0 This pattern really sings in silk! I wish you could touch it too.\u00a0 Amazing!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-16-11.42.41-e1508168674177.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" manufacturing building, called the Arts and Industry Building, that has been turned into artists&#8217; studios.\u00a0 Two weavers have studios there, Christina Hammel and Paula Valeta.\u00a0 Chris&#8217; studio is on the 3rd floor and the stairwell is part of the experience of visiting.\u00a0 The stairwell is full of light where plants are growing, and the stairs and banisters are original vintage, well worn wood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-11.17.32-e1508166983671.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5091\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-11.17.32-e1508166983671.jpg\" alt=\"2017-10-14 11.17.32\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" that hangs from the 3rd floor and has grown all the way down the stairwell.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-11.18.01-e1508167079154.jpg\"><img href=\"http:\/\/www.hillinstitute.com\/instructor_details.cfm?id=15\">Hill Institute<\/a>, and maintains her own studio in this historic building.\u00a0 Along with items for sale, she had a display of various weaving techniques for visitors to see.\u00a0 I loved these shadow weave table linens, especially the orange borders!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-11.31.18-e1508167122969.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5094\" has inspired me to think of things I can make for Tori as she grows.\u00a0 At one point Chris had considered starting a clothing line of handwoven garments for children.\u00a0 I will consider it a great accomplishment if I can\u00a0keep my own little one in handwoven outfits!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-12.51.23.jpg\"><img can just see a bit of shadow weave and some small woven bands, both Andean pebble weave and kumihimo.\u00a0 Here is a better look.<\/p>\n<p><a a taka dai set up in her studio.\u00a0 Her husband made it for her from plans by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creaturecabana.com\/pages\/takaplans.html\">Carol Miller Franklin<\/a>.\u00a0 My husband started building me a taka dai about five years ago, based on Rodrick Owen&#8217;s plans.\u00a0 That project got set aside when we packed up and moved to Connecticut.\u00a0 He has had problems with it anyway, since some of the details require metric tools that he cannot find here.\u00a0 Carol Miller Franklin&#8217;s taka dai measurements call for tools that are more readily available here.\u00a0 I am excited by the possibility of finally getting a taka dai of my own&#8211;even if I have to wait for Bob&#8217;s return to woodworking next spring.<\/p>\n<p>A short ways down the hall and up a half flight of stairs brought us to Paula Valeta&#8217;s studio.\u00a0 She also has large windows with views of the surrounding hills that are starting to glow with autumn colors.\u00a0 She has created a wonderful display of her woven samples, using embroidery hoops.\u00a0 This is a great idea that I plan to use in the future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2017-10-14-12.13.23-e1508167209437.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5096\" crazy these days, I would have taken the whole weekend to visit all seven studios on this Weavers&#8217; Trail.\u00a0 They plan to do it again next year, and I plan to make time for the whole thing!\u00a0 There is nothing like a bit of contact with other weavers and a good dose of inspiration to fuel ideas for future work.\u00a0 We saw weaving acquaintances from other guilds, and I had the happy surprise of bumping into my New Hampshire friend, Emily!
