{"id":3998,"date":"2016-02-13T15:55:29","date_gmt":"2016-02-13T15:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=3998"},"modified":"2016-02-13T16:09:22","modified_gmt":"2016-02-13T16:09:22","slug":"manatees-eagle-rays-and-turtles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=3998","title":{"rendered":"Manatees, Eagle Rays, and Turtles!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been positively idyllic spending time in Great Harbour Cay. \u00a0Yesterday, with calm winds and sun we took our dinghy on an excursion about 2 miles south along the western coast to enter a mangrove swamp called &#8220;Shark Creek.&#8221; (hmmm) \u00a0After a mile or so of motoring through very shallow waters with mangroves on either side and making a verdant canopy over our heads, we exited into a large shallow protected bay on the eastern side of the cay, into waters full of turtles and rays.<\/p>\n<p>I followed a ray and various turtles around for close to an hour while Bob used the go-pro to get footage. \u00a0It was exhilarating to see so many turtles!<br \/>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GP7aoiA8ZBY\" width=\"501\" height=\"501\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On our way back out of the mangrove creek which is only navigable for a short time before\/during\/after high tide, we motored over to a well known fishing boat wreck that&#8217;s been stuck on the sand flats for many years. It got caught in a hurricane years ago and was thrown up on a sand bar. \u00a0This is a great snorkeling and fishing spot for seeing lobsters and large snappers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-013.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3999\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3999\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-013.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"532\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-013.jpg 700w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-013-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the way back to the harbour we saw some striking shore birds with bright orange\/red bills. \u00a0I&#8217;ve never seen them in US waters, but after searching for them on the internet, we discovered that they are called American Oyster Catchers.\u00a0\u00a0They summer along the New England coast and then migrate as far as Chile! \u00a0I have never seen one before yesterday, and now all at once I&#8217;ve seen a large flock of them. \u00a0We approached slowly to get photos, and it was a thrill to see them all take flight together!<\/p>\n<p>Their bills are much brighter orange\/red than this photo shows. In fact, what caught my attention from a long way off was all the bright dots of red I could see along the shore.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-021.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4000\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-021.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"523\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-021.jpg 700w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-021-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-035.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4001\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-035.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"511\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-035.jpg 700w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-13-16a-035-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s been quite a bit colder than &#8216;normal&#8217; in this part of the world, the manatees have been looking for warmer water. \u00a0They&#8217;ve been visiting in the harbor here, and yesterday a mother and cub were quite interested in hanging out behind <em>Pandora<\/em>. \u00a0They enjoyed drinking fresh water right the from hose on the dock, and drinking the salt water that came out of our stern from our refrigeration unit. \u00a0They particularly like having water from the hose aimed at their bellies when they roll over. \u00a0The mother seemed to be showing the cub just how the &#8216;rolling over&#8217; trick is done.
