{"id":2864,"date":"2014-07-09T17:05:11","date_gmt":"2014-07-09T17:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2864"},"modified":"2014-07-09T17:15:40","modified_gmt":"2014-07-09T17:15:40","slug":"the-best-thing-about-summer-weaving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2864","title":{"rendered":"The BEST Thing about Summer Weaving&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, there are lots of good things about weaving at any time&#8230;.but in the summer here, when the middle of the day is a bit steamy, and the nights are cool and breezy, we often don&#8217;t turn on the air conditioning. \u00a0That&#8217;s not necessarily my choice, but for the sake of marital harmony I conceed that it&#8217;s only a few hours in the afternoon that are too hot, so we have yet to turn on the AC. \u00a0And besides, I can go hang out in my almost-too-cold studio.<\/p>\n<p>My studio is in the basement, and unlike my last house, this is a <em>nice<\/em> basement. \u00a0The whole back of my studio is above ground and even has a terrace, which Bob made last summer, for sitting outside. \u00a0The light is wonderful through the windows and the glass door. \u00a0When it&#8217;s too hot to be tempted outside I can enjoy the views of my gardens and the nature preserve while getting some productive work done. \u00a0It&#8217;s a win-win situation!<\/p>\n<p>During this first hot spell of summer, I am making good progress on the huck fabric for the lunch tote. \u00a0This photo was taken a few days ago, when I reached the end of the yard of fabric for the tote. \u00a0Now I&#8217;ve woven two of the five napkins that are also on this warp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-04-15.25.28.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2865\" alt=\"2014-07-04 15.25.28\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-04-15.25.28-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-04-15.25.28-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-04-15.25.28-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And I&#8217;ve finally had a space of time (without visitors!) when I could concentrate on my chopstick portrait. \u00a0This is a recent idea of Archie Brennan. \u00a0At our monthly Wednesday Group meetings we get Chinese take out after class on the first day. \u00a0Over the years this has added up to a lot of chopsticks. \u00a0He and Susan have washed and saved all the chopsticks, and Archie was wondering how they could be re-purposed. \u00a0He ended up making little chopstick looms for each member of our group, and he set an assignement to weave a portrait.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I decided to attempt a face from ancient Greek red figure pottery. \u00a0This particular face happens to be Artemis. \u00a0In the image of her on a 5th century BC, lekythos, she has drawn her bow and is focused on her target.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-01-15.50.30.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2866\" alt=\"2014-07-01 15.50.30\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-01-15.50.30-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-01-15.50.30-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-01-15.50.30-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The main reason I chose this portrait was to have fun with the hair! So I put in Ghiordes knots every pass and a half which allowed for the knots to be on alternating warps. \u00a0Then I braided the long strands and played around putting her hair up in various ways. \u00a0I did not want to sew her hair in place, but that may become necessary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Tapestry-Red-Figure-Artemis-on-Chopsticks.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2867\" alt=\"Tapestry Red Figure Artemis on Chopsticks\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Tapestry-Red-Figure-Artemis-on-Chopsticks-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Tapestry-Red-Figure-Artemis-on-Chopsticks-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Tapestry-Red-Figure-Artemis-on-Chopsticks-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This project was so much fun I want to make another&#8230;..another Greek subject in honor of Archie&#8230;. wait and see!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yesterday I spent the day sewing a mock up of the lunch tote so I&#8217;ll be ready to sew when I finish this fabric&#8230;.the fabric is on hiatus until after Convergence where I&#8217;ll pick up one more spool of 16\/2 linen for weft from Lone Star Looms. \u00a0That&#8217;s a story not worth repeating&#8230;.but suffice it to say that I have made three attempts from two different sources to get enough weft for this project!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Naturally, I could not find any fabric that was a spot-on equivalent to my handwoven linen. \u00a0I opted for a heavy cotton duck fabric. \u00a0It&#8217;s considerably more tightly woven than my huck fabric, but it should be pretty similar after I fuse interfacing to the back of my fabric. \u00a0Hope so, anyway!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is the lining, with pockets&#8230;..turned right side out for a better view.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-08-15.01.17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2868\" alt=\"2014-07-08 15.01.17\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-08-15.01.17-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-08-15.01.17-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-08-15.01.17-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And here is the almost finished bag. \u00a0I&#8217;m still hunting for the purse snaps that are well hidden somewhere in my stash of notions, before I stitch the final top of bag together&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-09-12.53.23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2869\" alt=\"2014-07-09 12.53.23\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-09-12.53.23-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-09-12.53.23-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2014-07-09-12.53.23-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now that I&#8217;ve worked out how the bag will be sewn (and hopefully made all my mistakes!) Jared Flood&#8217;s &#8220;Brooklyn Tweed&#8221; yarn that I bought at Harrisville on our recent trip. \u00a0At this point it&#8217;s just miles of stockinette, so I haven&#8217;t taken a photo.
