{"id":2708,"date":"2014-04-09T19:06:33","date_gmt":"2014-04-09T19:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2708"},"modified":"2014-04-09T19:48:23","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T19:48:23","slug":"30-words-for-wind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2708","title":{"rendered":"30 Words for Wind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.and some artistic views of it&#8230; let&#8217;s start with Winslow Homer.<\/p>\n<p>He captures just how I feel <em>at anchor<\/em> today. \u00a0Luckily no sharks circling the boat just now, but otherwise these are pretty much the conditions here today.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/uploads8.wikipaintings.org\/images\/winslow-homer\/the-gulf-stream.jpg\" width=\"541\" height=\"321\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We are stuck in another cold front with strong westerly winds, a direction that makes it hard to find good protection in this part of the world.\u00a0 We are in Elizabeth Harbor on Great Exuma, but since it is a huge bay there is far too much room for wind and waves to build.\u00a0 We are yanking so hard on our anchor that it\u2019s hard to imagine either the anchor or the bow of the boat surviving this without damage.<\/p>\n<p>I have made references to words for wind almost every time I have talked about sailing. \u00a0As I\u2019ve said many times, &#8216;zephyr&#8217; is my favorite wind word, and I\u2019d really rather not sail in anything but a zephyr.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t seen a single one this winter.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first things I learned about words when I began studying them, is that if there is not a word for something, like oak tree, in a language, that\u2019s a sure sign that no oak trees grow where that language is spoken.\u00a0 Duh!\u00a0 And of course the opposite is true!\u00a0 If there are 30 words for wind in a language, you can bet they have a lot of wind.\u00a0 Like the Inuit and words for snow.<\/p>\n<p>I have no idea which language has the most words of wind. \u00a0I remember hearing that ancient Greek has 30 words for it&#8230; maybe that was just a catchy phrase in Greek courses in the 70&#8230;but it has stayed with me for four decades.<\/p>\n<p>I am utterly tired of the wind this winter.\u00a0 It\u2019s been spring for three weeks now, but we are still having these winter cold fronts down here with strong winds.\u00a0 Bob just heard from his weather router this morning that there are at least two more weeks of this clocking wind headed our way.<\/p>\n<p>Here is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarah-swett.com\/\">Sarah Swett\u2019s<\/a> marvelous &#8220;The Hut on the Rock, the Sea.&#8221;&#8230;. look at those calm waters!\u2026..look at that lovely coracle!\u2026..it\u2019s hard for me to imagine a more idyllic time on the water than this. \u00a0I haven\u2019t experienced a moment like this in so long I cannot remember.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/sarah-swett-hut-on-the-rock.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2710\" alt=\"sarah swett hut on the rock\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/sarah-swett-hut-on-the-rock.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/sarah-swett-hut-on-the-rock.jpg 450w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/sarah-swett-hut-on-the-rock-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here is Barbara Heller\u2019s \u201cAll the Diamonds.&#8221; \u00a0She\u2019s done a beautiful job rendering the brilliant points of light on water \u2026..again not something I\u2019ve seen in a while since it\u2019s always blowing a gale here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Barbara-Heller-AllTheDiamondslg2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2711\" alt=\"Barbara Heller AllTheDiamondslg2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Barbara-Heller-AllTheDiamondslg2.jpg\" width=\"1015\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Barbara-Heller-AllTheDiamondslg2.jpg 1015w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Barbara-Heller-AllTheDiamondslg2-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1015px) 100vw, 1015px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Best of all, this tapestry by Sarah Swett depicts my idea of a perfect day: \u00a0my feet firmly planted on dear Mother Earth, admiring the lovely water view&#8230;.while knitting!
