{"id":2420,"date":"2013-11-27T16:19:11","date_gmt":"2013-11-27T16:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2420"},"modified":"2014-09-10T13:00:16","modified_gmt":"2014-09-10T13:00:16","slug":"knitting-is-catching-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2420","title":{"rendered":"Knitting is Catching Fire!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oops! \u00a0See note at end the end of this post for why this post is badly titled!<\/p>\n<p>Bob and I went to the movies last night. \u00a0It was an escape from the very sad and very stressful time we are going through, which involves a loved one&#8217;s serious health condition. \u00a0Bob has been not-so-patiently awaiting the release of the second &#8220;Hunger Games&#8221; movie so we dashed out to see it last night on his return from the daily hospital visit. I was mildly intrigued, but definitely looking forward to an evening&#8217;s distraction&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>No one warned me there would be<em> KNITTING<\/em>! \u00a0The whole first segment of the movie held me captive, and I was craning forward in my theater seat to get a better look at the unusual knitted designs that Katniss wore! \u00a0It was a visual feast! \u00a0I swear there were three knitting garments, but I must be wrong&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;.because these garments are already all over the internet, and there are only two:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Katniss-Screen-Shot-2013-10-17-at-6.45.25-PM.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2421\" title=\"Knitting Katniss Screen-Shot-2013-10-17-at-6.45.25-PM\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Katniss-Screen-Shot-2013-10-17-at-6.45.25-PM.png\" width=\"860\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Katniss-Screen-Shot-2013-10-17-at-6.45.25-PM.png 860w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Katniss-Screen-Shot-2013-10-17-at-6.45.25-PM-300x139.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-katniss-catching-fire-2-537x402.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2423\" title=\"Knitting katniss-catching-fire-2-537x402\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-katniss-catching-fire-2-537x402.jpg\" width=\"537\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-katniss-catching-fire-2-537x402.jpg 537w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-katniss-catching-fire-2-537x402-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This garment does not look knitted to me. \u00a0It made me think of nalbinding or some other rather ancient technique that predates what we call knitting today. \u00a0I&#8217;m intrigued! \u00a0I&#8217;d love to see the real garment.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was this lovely cowl in luscious shades of berries\/trees\/water. \u00a0There is something really interesting going on in the stitch pattern. I tried to magnify this image to get a better look, but it just got a bit blurry! Hmmmmm&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Katniss-Cowl-close-up.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2429\" title=\"Knitting Katniss-Cowl close up\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Katniss-Cowl-close-up.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Katniss-Cowl-close-up.jpg 570w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Katniss-Cowl-close-up-253x300.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Okay&#8230;.enough about Katniss! \u00a0Here are a few things I&#8217;ve been working on lately. \u00a0Mostly, I have to say that I&#8217;ve been curled up in a fetal position for several weeks now&#8230;.sleeping too much&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>My English friend, Lesley, just finished <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravelry.com\/patterns\/library\/baby-cables-and-big-ones-too\">this sweater<\/a> in a deep garnet merino wool. I bet it is breathtaking! \u00a0I was so intrigued that I had to have one too&#8230;. in medium blue cotton (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cascadeyarns.com\/cascade-UltraPima.asp\">Cascade&#8217;s Ultra Pima in color #3772<\/a>). \u00a0I have finished the cables around the neckline, and now I&#8217;ve put it aside&#8230;..it&#8217;s a lot of plain stockinette for the rest of the body&#8230;.sigh&#8230;. I do love the way the longest cable comes down below the garter stitch area, which you can see on the right side in the photo. \u00a0What a beautiful design!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-19-13.29.411.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2426\" title=\"2013-11-19 13.29.41\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-19-13.29.411.jpg\" width=\"479\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-19-13.29.411.jpg 479w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-19-13.29.411-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m spinning my first &#8220;Tsarina of Tsocks&#8221; kit called &#8220;Kitri.&#8221; \u00a0The body of the sock is a lovely claret red merino\/silk blend. \u00a0I&#8217;m doing a test spin for a 4-ply by topping off a few bobbins with the tsarina fiber so I can ply just a short amount to check my knitting gauge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Kitri.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2427\" title=\"Knitting Kitri\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Knitting-Kitri.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-27-10.52.16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2430\" title=\"2013-11-27 10.52.16\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-27-10.52.16-1024x764.jpg\" width=\"410\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-27-10.52.16-1024x764.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-27-10.52.16-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A couple of weeks ago Bob set up my large Shannock tapestry loom. \u00a0I&#8217;m ready to start two tapestries and need to decide which one comes first! \u00a0The full size Flax Spinner or &#8220;Into the Night,&#8221; which is a new cartoon I recently made&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-27-10.57.57.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2431\" title=\"2013-11-27 10.57.57\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-27-10.57.57-1024x764.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-27-10.57.57-1024x764.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-27-10.57.57-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Isn&#8217;t she an impressive loom? Cartoons are draped on the treadle bar, including a really old cartoon that I never wove. \u00a0In the foreground you can see an umbrella swift with a skein of silk draped on it. \u00a0I just finished using that silk to make a warp for my next painted warp project. \u00a0It will be a small wall hanging based on an image Bob took while we were in the Bahamas. \u00a0If all goes well, maybe I will bring it with me in January and hang it on the wall of our main salon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-028.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2432\" title=\"2013-11-028\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-028.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-028.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-028-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And speaking of making cartoons&#8230;. I borrowed an opaque projector from an old friend. \u00a0It&#8217;s quite a relic from the 50s and makes quite a roar when I turned it on. \u00a0In fact, it blew a fuse, so I haven&#8217;t actually gotten to use it yet. \u00a0Here&#8217;s Bob setting it up for me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-24-07.46.36.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2436\" title=\"2013-11-24 07.46.36\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-24-07.46.36-764x1024.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-24-07.46.36-764x1024.jpg 764w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-24-07.46.36-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-11-24-07.46.36.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So, I guess I&#8217;m doing more than just sleeping my days away, and I&#8217;m glad I wrote this. \u00a0It helped me see that I am progressing on work&#8230;.just at a snail&#8217;s pace&#8230; and that (in reality) is not much slower than I normally work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> \u00a0It has been 10 months since I posted this, and clearly interest in the Katniss fashions from &#8220;Catching Fire&#8221; is still running high! \u00a0Many thanks to Kristin from dreamspunfiber.com who sent some links to the two designs I wrote about. \u00a0It turns out neither one was knitted! \u00a0They are both woven! &#8230;and the green cowl is a beauty in what looks like deflected double weave!
