{"id":2374,"date":"2013-10-26T14:13:25","date_gmt":"2013-10-26T14:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2374"},"modified":"2013-10-26T14:13:25","modified_gmt":"2013-10-26T14:13:25","slug":"ups-and-downs-of-life-aboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=2374","title":{"rendered":"Ups and Downs of Life Aboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s no surprise that living on board a boat has its challenges&#8230;.some things are just so easy at home and so hard on the water. \u00a0I have gone for months and years at home with no major equipment failures&#8230;..heat, water, appliances. \u00a0At home we expect these things to go on working for decades&#8230;. \u00a0On board they break all the time. \u00a0You cannot get through a single sailing season without constant repair to major things&#8230;.. why is that???<\/p>\n<p>So, I won&#8217;t go through the laundry list of things that have gone kaput on Pandora. \u00a0It&#8217;s too long and technical for a weaving blog anyway. \u00a0But I will say that these problems fall heavily on Bob, so he has been under strain to find the source of our engine problems and our failed heating system. \u00a0We have been freezing the past few days as the temperatures have been unseasonably cold in Virginia and North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/10-26-13a-001.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2380\" title=\"10-26-13a 001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/10-26-13a-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/10-26-13a-001.jpg 700w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/10-26-13a-001-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I finished my niece&#8217;s sweater and have plenty of yarn leftover to make her a matching hat&#8230;.I could almost make a second sweater! (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pollymacc.com\/brother_sisterchild.html\">Polly Macc&#8217;s Brother\/Sister pattern<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-10-025.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2376\" title=\"2013-10-025\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-10-025.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But I have been SO cold that I decided to take out a bigger unfinished project so I could wrap myself in it as I knit. \u00a0It&#8217;s the fun Vivian Hoxbro wrap called &#8220;Zig Zag.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Vivian-Hoxbro-zig-zag.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2375\" title=\"Vivian Hoxbro zig zag\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Vivian-Hoxbro-zig-zag.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"500\" sizes=\"(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I began to take a close look at where I left off and how to get back into the zen of this pattern I began to realize that&#8217;s it&#8217;s been a <em>really<\/em> long time since I put this away. \u00a0I bought this kit when I met Vivian at a workshop at a friend&#8217;s house&#8230;.we were able to arrange this workshop because the friend offered to meet Vivian at the airport on her very first knitting workshop tour of the US, which meant that we became her very first group of students on her US tour. \u00a0Ours was not a scheduled workshop, but something that my savvy friend was able to put together since she was housing Vivian on the first leg of her US tour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-10-027.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2378\" title=\"2013-10-027\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-10-027.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"500\" 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;.how many years ago was that?? \u00a0Vivian&#8217;s book <em>Domino Knitting<\/em> was new in the US, and she had copies with her to sell. \u00a0It was autumn, and I knitted my Zig Zag through that season and on into winter. \u00a0I remember specific knitting times when I was waiting in a physical therapy office, happily knitting, while my younger son was getting therapy for some long distance running injuries. \u00a0Yesterday I asked Christopher what year that might have been, and he thinks it was either his sophomore or junior year of high school. \u00a0That was a <em>long<\/em> time ago&#8230;..2002 or 2003. \u00a0And since I met Vivian a few months earlier in the fall of the previous year, I&#8217;m pretty certain that I started this pattern in fall of 2002. \u00a0<em>Eleven years ago<\/em>&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-10-029.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What surprises me about how long it&#8217;s been since I set this project aside is that I have thought of this fun pattern every few months, planning to get back to it. \u00a0For <em>over a decade<\/em> I have told myself that I would pick up my Zig Zag right after I finish this or that other project&#8230;..and it&#8217;s now been 11
