The exhibit was \u201cSerizawa: Master of Japanese Textile Design\u201d at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japansociety.org\/event_detail?eid=41b9f5c\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">Japan Society<\/font><\/a> in New York. (The book, which I bought, is available at the link above.)<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.japansociety.org\/resources\/legacy\/event\/Serizawa_14_450.jpg\" width=\"223\" height=\"239\" \/>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_C_rkbvL5mqM\/SuUP8XFsWSI\/AAAAAAAAAdQ\/0JZ4KszgaBw\/s400\/Serizawa_13_450.jpg\" width=\"321\" height=\"301\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_PM1ZKIZPNOM\/SyTmx_ThR5I\/AAAAAAAACLQ\/iucTNaFTzEA\/s400\/Serizawa-01-web.jpg\" \/> These are all dyed works on silk, hemp and cotton cloth (I believe handwoven cloth). This is a traditional technique known as katazome, which involves stenciling with natural dyes and natural resists. Serizawa was a master of this technique and is a National Treasure in his country.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160; <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.artnet.com\/images_US\/magazine\/features\/finch\/finch10-21-09-4.jpg\" width=\"316\" height=\"364\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_vr3Kz59CGZY\/SwAwx8EsksI\/AAAAAAAAA44\/WY02Gm8Uy2g\/s400\/3+Serizawa+calligraphy.jpg\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>I am particularly interested in his use of lines and brush strokes.&#160; Many of these images are <em>so<\/em> similar to ideas I\u2019ve imagined weaving in tapestry.&#160; It was a thrill for me to see what he did with dyes!&#160; I have a small folder of Arabic and Hebrew script which I\u2019d like to weave, and this image of Japanese characters is going in the same folder!&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Awesome, <em>Awesome<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_vr3Kz59CGZY\/SwAw6HFdhiI\/AAAAAAAAA5A\/i4wjsS_9hrE\/s400\/2+kimono+shaped+comforter,+edo.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>> It\u2019s not fair to talk about an exhibit after it\u2019s closed, so I will apologize right up front!&#160; I got so much inspiration from this exhibit that I have to mention it, and I will at least share images of the pieces that moved me!
