{"id":150,"date":"2009-12-08T01:11:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-08T01:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=150"},"modified":"2009-12-08T01:11:00","modified_gmt":"2009-12-08T01:11:00","slug":"ah-december%e2%80%a6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=150","title":{"rendered":">Ah, December\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>><\/p>\n<p>It seems every holiday is balanced with a share of grief.&#160; Perhaps winter celebrations were established to balance our sufferings through these dark months.<\/p>\n<p>This is a study for a larger tapestry I still haven\u2019t made.&#160; The bigger idea is not ready yet, but at the time of the study I made a list of mothers I know who had lost their children.&#160; I just added one more name to that list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/Sx0LjvG1M3I\/AAAAAAAABnk\/zH7T1WyltNA\/s1600-h\/Detail%20of%20Life%2018%20x%208%5B5%5D.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" title=\"Detail of Life 18 x 8\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Detail of Life 18 x 8\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_wMHmSKIt2bg\/Sx0LjyY3nXI\/AAAAAAAABno\/z1QwB9H91MM\/Detail%20of%20Life%2018%20x%208_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"187\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a> And yesterday I found this poem mixed in with my cache of knitting patterns:<\/p>\n<p><b>What the Living Do      <br \/><\/b>    <br \/>Johnny, the kitchen sink has been clogged for days, some utensil probably fell down there.     <br \/>And the Drano won&#8217;t work but smells dangerous, and the crusty dishes have piled up     <\/p>\n<p>waiting for the plumber I still haven&#8217;t called.&#160; This is the everyday we spoke of.     <br \/>It&#8217;s winter again: the sky&#8217;s a deep headstrong blue, and the sunlight pours though     <\/p>\n<p>the open living room windows because the heat&#8217;s on too high in here, and I can&#8217;t turn it off.     <br \/>For weeks now, driving, or dropping a bag of groceries in the street, the bag breaking,     <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking:&#160; This is what the living do.&#160; And yesterday, hurrying along those     <br \/>wobbly bricks in the Cambridge sidewalk, spilling my coffee down my wrist and sleeve,     <\/p>\n<p>I thought it again, and again later, when buying a hairbrush:&#160; This is it.     <br \/>Parking.&#160; Slamming the car door shut in the cold.&#160; What you called<i> that yearning<\/i>.     <\/p>\n<p>What you finally gave up.&#160; We want the spring to come and the winter to pass.&#160; We want     <br \/>whoever to call or not call, a letter, a kiss &#8212; we want more and more and then more of it.     <\/p>\n<p>But there are moments, walking, when I catch a glimpse of myself in the window glass,     <br \/>say, the window of the corner video store, and I&#8217;m gripped by a cherishing so deep     <\/p>\n<p>for my own blowing hair, chapped face, and unbuttoned coat that I&#8217;m speechless:     <br \/>I am living.&#160; I remember you.     <\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/poetryeverywhere\/howe.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">Marie Howe<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I promise to be more upbeat for the rest of the month\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>> It seems every holiday is balanced with a share of grief.&#160; Perhaps winter celebrations were established to balance our sufferings through these dark months.
