{"id":1333,"date":"2012-10-31T21:52:14","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T21:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=1333"},"modified":"2012-10-31T23:24:04","modified_gmt":"2012-10-31T23:24:04","slug":"a-golden-landscape-of-sweetgrass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=1333","title":{"rendered":"A Golden Landscape of Sweetgrass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today we are underway in a bright, fall landscape.\u00a0 Miles and miles of abandoned rice paddies on either side of us, now turned to fields of sweet grass interrupted by stands of cypress.\u00a0 I hope to find some sweetgrass baskets for sale somewhere along the way.\u00a0 Lots of bird life here:\u00a0 huge flocks of purple martins that darken the sky as they swoop by.\u00a0 They are all around, swooping in the distance then suddenly behind us and around us and charging off ahead.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think there can be many insects left for them to eat on these cold days.\u00a0 Every mile or so we see a bird of prey silhouetted in a dead cypress.\u00a0 Mostly hawks and buzzards\u2026eagles are getting rarer down here.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been told we might see alligators, and we\u2019re watching for them\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-011.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1335\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-011-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-011-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-011-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday we spent another night in our secluded little Jericho Creek, all alone.\u00a0 We\u2019ve kept warm by baking bread and other comfort foods.\u00a0 One morning I made an apple Dutch baby,\u00a0 mmmmm\u2026 \u00a0One evening recently I made pasta. \u00a0For 30 some odd years I&#8217;ve always mixed up the dough with a food processor, but <em>really<\/em>, it&#8217;s just egg and flour. \u00a0I was pretty certain I would do fine using a pastry cutter, and woohoo! \u00a0It works like a charm. \u00a0I will probably forego the food processor from here on, even at home. \u00a0I rolled out the dough with my little hand crank pasta machine. \u00a0It is on board with me since it doesn&#8217;t take up much room, and I left the cutter attachment at home. Even at home I rarely use that since I prefer to hand cut wide pappardelle type pasta. \u00a0I figured if I got this little workhorse home from Italy in my tiny suitcase many decades ago, I could surely find a small space for it on <em>Pandora<\/em>! \u00a0I&#8217;m very glad I brought it along!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-025.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1338\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-025.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-025.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-025-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I awoke this morning with a soft light shining in my eyes and thought I must have slept quite late, but it was the moon (one day past full) casting a silvery beam on me.\u00a0 It was 52 degrees in our cabin!\u00a0 Brrrrrrr!\u00a0 Outside the temperature was in the 40s.\u00a0 Time to make haste southward!<\/p>\n<p>We were off just after 7.30 as the sun rose, and for a brief and fragile moment I saw the real proof of Homer\u2019s phrase \u201crosy fingered dawn.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 The tips of the sweet grass and branches of cypress were tinged rose in the first light of day\u2026.I don\u2019t think it lasted more than a couple of minutes.\u00a0 It was breathtaking!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1337\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-009.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-009-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Happy Hallowe\u2019en!\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid we won\u2019t get much of a spooky celebration today unless we think of devious tricks to play on each other. And there is no candy on board, so if anything, it will just be tricks, \u00a0no treats. We will not reach civilization until tomorrow.\u00a0 Today is a long 60 miles or so through a narrow cut in these low lands, through marsh and by swirling inlets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-030.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1336\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-030-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-030-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-31-12-030-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, in late afternoon, we have just anchored in a small creek just north of Charleston. \u00a0The wind blew hard all day, from the high teens up to 25 mph. \u00a0The sun glinted brightly on the wind ruffled waters, but by late afternoon I was exhausted from the <em>glare<\/em>. \u00a0Never so happy to be out of it for now. \u00a0As we moved out of the creeks and back into saltier waters we began to see more pelicans again. \u00a0Boy! \u00a0They look so clumsy as they plunge into the water head first and create a huge splash. Doesn&#8217;t seem like they could possibly catch anything that way! Bob saw one dolphin! \u00a0No alligators&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I can just see a bit of Charleston on the horizon, promising many luxuries which I welcome! \u00a0I do love a secluded bit of space in a lovely landscape, but now I&#8217;m ready for some civilization!<\/p>\n<p>We have more than 1000 miles under our keel now.\u00a0 At <em>no point<\/em> in my previous life would I have wagered <em>anything<\/em> on <em>me<\/em> doing a trip like this.\u00a0 And now suddenly I\u2019ve wracked up over 1000 miles of sailing.\u00a0 I scarcely believe it\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Day 50, October 30:
