{"id":1253,"date":"2012-10-17T18:00:25","date_gmt":"2012-10-17T18:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=1253"},"modified":"2012-10-17T18:03:41","modified_gmt":"2012-10-17T18:03:41","slug":"north-carolina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/?p=1253","title":{"rendered":"North Carolina!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Days 36-37, October 15-16: <a href=\"http:\/\/share.findmespot.com\/shared\/faces\/viewspots.jsp?glId=0Hb9iiqRETcixSeCmrqUYj83WkVkHsoqq\">Dismal Swamp to Elizabeth City, North Carolina<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I must be acclimating to the slower pace of life on board because I was impressed that in barely one month of sailing we have entered North Carolina!\u00a0What a different way of thinking when I would have expected to get to North Carolina in one very long day of driving. \u00a0A month of sailing seems quite the right speed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-040.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1260\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-040-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-040-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-040-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here is a &#8216;do it yourself&#8217; bridge that a local farmer installed in order to get his cattle from one side of the canal to the other. \u00a0The guide book asks boaters to be patient with the farmer moving his livestock if the bridge should be closed when approaching it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-035.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1258\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-035-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-035-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-035-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The further south we went along the Dismal Swamp, the more duck weed we saw! \u00a0It looked like continents of duck weed!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-056.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1255\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-056-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-056-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-056-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Entering the second lock at South Mills, this time accompanied by quite a few more boats! Going down was even easier than going up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-048.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1254\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-048-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-048-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-048-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We exited the canal into Posquotank River to arrive at Elizabeth City at noon on Tuesday. \u00a0There is a well established tradition here of boats being welcomed to a free night of dockage and a wine and cheese party by local volunteers who continue the tradition of the well known &#8220;Rose Buddies&#8221; started by Fred Fearing and Joe Kramer in the mid-1980s. While both Joe and Fred have passed on, I was very fortunate to meet Fred&#8217;s good friend Gus, who personally welcomed me to Elizabeth City.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-074.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1256\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-074-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-074-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/10-17-12-074-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Every evening that there are boats on the dock these volunteers host a wine and cheese reception for the sailors. \u00a0Here I am with Gus on the left (of the photo) and former mayor Carl on the right. \u00a0Can you see my rose? Fred grew roses until his death in the mid-2000s, and every evening at the reception he would give a rose to each woman present! \u00a0His rose bushes have now been transplanted to the harbor&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argoknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/2012-10-17-11.58.18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter stunning today, I&#8217;d sure never venture out with this warning of both red <em>and<\/em> mackerel sky!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today we plan to visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumofthealbemarle.com\/\">Albemarle Museum<\/a> and the local fish market. \u00a0Then off we go the rest of the way down the Posquotank River and across Albemarle Sound to the Alligator River. \u00a0It all sounds quite exotic, doesn&#8217;t
